Mid Century African Hardwood Bust – Makonde Style Tribal Sculpture
Mid Century African Hardwood Bust – Makonde Style Tribal Sculpture
A striking mid to late 20th century African hardwood bust, hand carved in the manner of traditional East African Makonde sculpture
This expressive sculpture depicts an elder male figure with elongated facial features, textured hair detailing and a wonderfully characterful presence. The carving displays clear hand-tooling throughout and has developed an attractive aged patina over time.
The bust is carved from an extremely dense tropical hardwood — often referred to in the trade as “ironwood” — giving the piece exceptional weight and a rich natural surface. Visible grain, shrinkage lines and age-related cracking all contribute to the authentic sculptural quality of the work.
Unlike lighter mass-produced tourist carvings, this example has genuine presence, density and craftsmanship, making it a particularly decorative and collectable interior piece.
Ideal for:
- eclectic interiors
- African and tribal-inspired décor
- rustic and organic styling
- collectors of folk and ethnographic-style art
- interior designers seeking sculptural decorative objects
Condition
Good vintage condition with age-related wear throughout. Natural shrinkage cracks, surface marks and carving irregularities consistent with age, material and hand craftsmanship. The imperfections enhance the sculpture’s decorative character and authenticity.
Dimensions
- Height: approximately 12 inches
