Japanese “Hundred Boys” Bronzed Metal Scholar’s Object / Peach Form Sculpture
Japanese “Hundred Boys” Bronzed Metal Scholar’s Object / Peach Form Sculpture
An unusual and highly decorative Japanese-inspired solid cast metal scholar’s object, formed in the shape of a symbolic peach and richly detailed with traditional “Hundred Boys” scenes in deep relief.
The surface is intricately decorated with playful children, foliage, village architecture, and symbolic motifs associated with prosperity, longevity, and good fortune in East Asian art and folklore. A character cartouche to one side adds further decorative authenticity and visual appeal.
Unlike a vase or vessel, this piece is completely solid and was intended purely as a decorative object or display sculpture, giving it an impressively weighty and tactile presence.
Finished in a rich dark bronzed patina, the piece displays excellent relief detail throughout and works beautifully as a shelf piece, cabinet object, desk ornament, or part of a curated Japandi or Orientalist interior.
Likely dating to the mid-20th century, produced in the traditional Japanese/Chinese export decorative style.
Condition
Good vintage condition with age-related wear and patina consistent with age and use. Displays very well.
Approximate Date
Mid 20th century, circa 1950s–1970s.
